During the last decade (2015-2016), the Church celebrated the Jubilee Year of Mercy, proclaimed by Pope Francis, who teaches that “Mercy is the face of God.” The scriptural readings this weekend speak to us of this same mercy, as a constitutive part of the life of a Christian. Just as “The Lord is kind and merciful” (Psalm 103), we are instructed by Jesus: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you” (Luke 6:36-37). Mercy is love in action; it should be the way of our lives.
